If you're looking for a low-key outdoor destination for hiking and fishing, a visit to the Fort Drum Marsh Conservation Area in Indian River County might be right up your alley.
The area is the lesser-known neighbor of one of Florida's prettiest lakes to spot wildlife — Blue Cypress Lake. It includes a combination of wetland and upland communities and is a part of the southernmost reach of the St. Johns River's headwaters. There are three main areas for hiking, fishing, picnicking, and canoeing — Lake Cara, Horseshoe Lake, and Hog Island. You'll also see a variety of wildlife while here, from various birds to deer, turkey, and hogs. There is also seasonal hunting in the area, so make sure to check the official website for updates.
Fort Drum offers peace and quiet, but you won't be too far from amenities. Vero Beach, a beach town for a calm tropical escape, is only 30 minutes away. If you're coming from further away, both Orlando and West Palm Beach are about a two-hour drive, depending on traffic. The entrance is on the southern end of State Road 60, with a parking lot near Lake Cara. If you have a vehicle permit, you can head further in from Lake Cara and park at the Horseshoe Lake parking area.
Though Fellsmere, a city that's one of the world's top fishing spots, is less than 20 minutes away, you can also try your hand at catching something at Fort Drum. According to the St. Johns River Water Management District, the conservation area is one of the standout areas for fishing in the county. The marshland area is well-suited for kayakers or small boats, where you won't find crowds and can fish calm backwaters. As the area can be remote, make sure to get all the supplies you need before heading out. There are several bait and tackle shops near Blue Cypress Lake and Fellsmere, like Fellsmere Fishing HQ. Make sure to also check the weather, as previous visitors note that though Fort Drum is popular among anglers, strong winds can prevent you from fishing for longer.
If you're going hiking, the Red Blaze Trail is the longest route at 5.7 miles and starts from Horseshoe Lake and winds through the boardwalk at Hog Island. On Hog Island, there are a couple of different trails that interconnect with the Red Blaze Trail. You'll find the wooden boardwalk that will lead you through the trails of a blackwater hardwood swamp. You can go further to the Fort Drum Flatwoods, southwest of Hog Island, to complete the entire Red Blaze Trail. But according to Florida Hikes, the boardwalk hike in and around Hog Island is "the heart of the hike."

PALM BEACH GARDENS — One year after crews demolished the landmark PGA Marina indoor boat storage facility, construction of its successor is nearing completion.
The new Port 32 Palm Beach Gardens marina is slated to be finished in December, expanding the amount of storage space for local boaters. Crews tore down the 50-year-old PGA Marina's metal boat storage facility in March 2025, paving the way for redevelopment along the waterfront at PGA Boulevard and the Intracoastal Waterway.
Port 32 Marinas LLC, based in South Carolina, purchased the Palm Beach Gardens site in 2021, with plans to transform it into a flagship location that will include indoor and outdoor boat storage, a showroom and on-site maintenance and fueling.
Port 32 CEO Austin Schell said the site's proximity to waterfront restaurants and cafes as well as nearby inlets made it an attractive location.
"We love the market. We love the fact that it's in a highly visible, high-traffic corridor right off PGA Boulevard and the Intracoastal," he said. "It's accessible for both the Palm Beach Inlet as well as the Jupiter Inlet to the north. … It's kind of the destination for folks that want to go cruising, dock, dine, get fuel for a day or evening outing."
In 2023, the Palm Beach Gardens City Council voted unanimously to approve the $80 million project, at the time saying the overhaul would meet a need for boat storage in northern Palm Beach County and noting that many resident and business groups supported it.
In anticipation of the site's reopening this year, Port 32 Palm Beach Gardens began preleasing for storage units in mid-January. Schell did not say how many units have been leased, but said the number has so far exceeded expectations.
Plans initially called for the site have 451 dry storage slips and 20 wet slips for outdoor storage. However, the number of indoor slips was slightly reduced to 427 to accommodate more storage bays for larger boats, Schell said.
Two 83-foot-tall buildings will be used for boat storage, showrooms and office space. A third, smaller 5,000-square-foot building will be a ship’s store with fueling stations for boats that can dock directly at the building.
The marina will house vessels up to 60 feet long in facilities built to withstand Category 5 storm winds.

Alina Habba, the former acting New Jersey US attorney and one-time personal lawyer for President Trump, divorced her millionaire husband after nearly six years of marriage and relocated to Palm Beach, The Post confirmed.
The brunette firebrand, 41, called it quits with hubby Gregg Reuben sometime after she resigned from her role as the Garden State’s top federal prosecutor in early December, friends of hers revealed on Tuesday. The split was first reported by the Daily Mail.
Habba, who rose to prominence after Trump hired her in 2021, headed for the greener pastures of Palm Beach, Florida — a short way from the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort.
Pals of the glamorous former fashion executive said Habba is better off following the split.
“She’s a self-made lawyer who fought her way to the top, a devoted mom and someone who refuses to dim her personality to satisfy critics,” one friend said, “even when life throws personal challenges her way.”
Habba is a “strong woman” who was “lucky enough to leave a man not worth sharing a life with.”
A second source close to Habba added that she “initiated the split” while the couple was bouncing between New Jersey and the Sunshine State until they seemingly reached an impasse.
“She trusts herself and she’s zero bulls–t,” the source noted.
“This sort of situation, although unfortunate for anyone, was the right thing for her and her family.”
“Alina is constantly working and running, traveling — the woman doesn’t stop, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. She’s a machine,” the source added.
Neither source indicated that Habba had found a new beau.

Our initial report shared that Toronto-based Great Gulf had revealed plans for a 31-story venture that would feature 87 condos. Now, the developer has not only launched sales but has announced that the high-rise would be under the Mandarin Oriental Residences banner.
The Mandarin Oriental Residences, West Palm Beach is set for a 2031 completion where, as noted, it’ll offer 87 condos. Residences will span two-bedroom to four-bedroom layout plans, measuring from 2,151 to 6,339 square feet. Each unit will feature views of the Intracoastal Waterway; they’re priced starting at $3.5 million.
A sampling of some communal amenities includes a ground-level swimming pool and bar, pickleball court, and fitness center, among others. Great Gulf purchased the three-acre build site for $28.5 million in 2024. The site currently hosts Poinsettia Apartment complex, a two-building, 72-unit development built in 1966.

Codina Partners has topped off Sevilla at Downtown Doral, a seven-story, 405-unit residential tower located at the corner of Northwest 53rd Street and Northwest 52nd Terrace in Doral, Florida. The milestone marks the completion of vertical construction on the mid-rise development, which is rising on a 4.2-acre parcel within the 250-acre mixed-use Downtown Doral community. Codina Partners is developing the project in collaboration with ANF Group and MSA Architects.
“The topping off of Sevilla marks an important achievement driven by the collective efforts of the development and construction teams,” said Ana-Marie Codina, CEO of Codina Partners, the developers of Downtown Doral. “As the project advances, we remain focused on delivering a life-style focused residential experience that matches the market’s demand.”
To finance construction, Codina Partners secured a $100 million loan provided by Regions Bank, which funded 65 percent of the capital stack, in conjunction with Ocean Bank, which provided the remaining 35 percent.
Sevilla will introduce a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom residences ranging in size from 720 to 1,708 square feet. The development will also contain more than 15,800 square feet of common areas and amenity space. Planned features include a resort-style pool deck with a beach-entry pool, private cabanas, barbecue stations, and outdoor lounge areas. Additional outdoor spaces will include a zen courtyard and a dog park. A rooftop wellness deck is planned with pickleball courts, a yoga yard, a walking path, and seating areas.
Indoor amenities will consist of a club room and lounge, a two-story fitness center, and a dedicated ride-share lobby.
The property is situated within walking distance of Downtown Doral’s retail and dining offerings and is one block from UHealth’s new 150,000-square-foot Ambulatory Center, which provides outpatient medical services.
Pre-leasing is expected to begin in late 2026. The project will be delivered in two phases, with initial move-ins anticipated in the first quarter of 2027 and full completion scheduled for the third quarter of 2027.
Upon completion, Sevilla will be managed by Codina Partners’ Multi-Family Property Management Division, the firm’s in-house platform launched in 2025 to oversee operations across its residential portfolio.
